The Nigerian military has apprehended a high ranking member of the Boko Haram sect, after a fierce battle in Konduga, close to Maiduguri.

Pictures have been released of Nigerian troops returning from a successful routing of Boko Haram militants who jubilate on the streets of Maiduguri celebrating the capture of an armed personnel carrier (APC) with the insignia of the militants' sect.

Troops in separate battles on Wednesday reportedly routed the sect fighters and killed scores during failed attempts to occupy Konduga, about 70 kilometers to Maiduguri.

It was gathered that the captured commander was seriously wounded and is currently receiving treatment in a military medical facility.

The hostage, whose name is still withheld, was said to have been captured after a second but more fierce battle waged by the insurgents to capture the town.

In another battle, which occurred at Benishek on Wednesday, troops fought through an ambush, impounded four motorcycles and wounded some terrorists while others fled.

Among seized items in the Konduga fight were weapons and equipments including 24 rifles, five rocket propelled grenade tubes, two machine guns, as well as a Ford Ranger Vehicle. Another Ford Ranger vehicle was reportedly destroyed.

The Boko Haram, which is interpreted as 'Western education is forbidden', officially called Jama'atu Ahlis Sunna Lldda'Awati Wal Jihad (People committed to the prophet's teachings for propagation and jihad), has since its resurgence in 2010, been a threat to the government in terms of the fear that it would tear apart  the nation of Nigeria.
