The Obafemi Awolowo University in Osun State have barred the resumption of students from Liberia, as well as other West African countries which are affected by the deadly Ebola virus.

A female student who fell ill and was suspected to have contracted the virus, being a secondary contact of the late doctor Ikechukwu Enemuo, was tested negative. It was confirmed after series of tests that she did not have the virus. Professor Bamitale Omole, the Vice Chancellor disclosed this at a press conference on Thursday. He said that with the confirmation from the Ebola Isolation Center in Lagos, in collaboration with the World Health Organisation (WHO), the student should not be stigmatized, and would be allowed to resume her academics after recovering from her illness. He also dispelled rumors that another student had the disease.

The Vice Chancellor also announced that some foreign students have been barred from resuming, especially those from Liberia, because their country is one in which the deadly virus is widely spread. He therefore announced that OAU is Ebola free.

He also said that an EVS Surveillance and Monitoring unit where suspected cases of the EVD could be reported had been established.

"We therefore wish to inform the university community and the general public that OAU is Ebola virus disease free", he said. "Therefore everyone is enjoined to go about their normal business freely without fear or panic. However, as prevention is better than cure, members of the university community and the general public are advised to maintain standard hygienic precautionary measures as established by the University Ebola Surveillance Committee".

Prof Bamitale said that the institution authorities had bought infrared thermometers to measure temperature of students and staff as another measure to make the OAU Ebola free.
